The TCF IRN (Test de connaissance du français– Intégration, Résidence et Nationalité) is an official French-language test developed by France Éducation international. It is designed for adults and young people aged 16 and over who need to demonstrate their level of French for immigration and residency procedures in France.

The TCF IRN can be used to demonstrate French-language proficiency for:

• An application for French nationality
• A first carte de résident (resident card)
• Validation of A1 French proficiency as part of the OFII integration pathway

Exam Structure

The TCF IRN consists of four compulsory components:

• Listening Comprehension | 25 multiple-choice questions · 20 minutes
• Reading Comprehension | 25 multiple-choice questions · 35 minutes
• Written Expression | 3 tasks · 30 minutes
• Oral Expression | 3 tasks, individual interview with an examiner · 10 minutes

The TCF IRN assesses language skills only. It does not test knowledge of French history, culture, government, or society.

What level do I need?

The TCF IRN can certify achievement of levels A1, A2, B1, and B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

As of January 1, 2026, the French language requirements are:

Carte de séjour pluriannuelle: A minimum overall level of A2 is required.

Carte de résident: A minimum overall level of B1 is required.

French nationality (naturalization): A minimum level of B2 in both oral and written French is required for applications submitted from January 1, 2026.

Test Results

Your TCF IRN results will be available through the test center approximately 3–4 weeks after the examination date.

How long are TCF IRN results valid?

A TCF IRN attestation is valid for two years from the date the results are issued. The expiration date is indicated on the official attestation.

Retaking the TCF IRN

Candidates may retake the TCF IRN as many times as necessary, but must wait at least 20 days between two test sessions.

Accommodations

Candidates who require testing accommodations because of a disability or health condition should contact the test center before registering for the examination.

France Éducation international has a specific procedure for requesting accommodations. Supporting medical documentation may be required, and accommodations must be reviewed and approved in accordance with the applicable procedures.
