Launch Party: Transat' no. 5

Join us for a celebratory evening of poetry, translation, and transatlantic exchange!

To mark the launch their fifth issue, transatlantic poetry journal Transat’ has invited four of the issue’s contributors for a reading:

• Mahealani Deenik
• James Garwood-Cole
• Jessi Gaston
• Ed Roberson

The poets’ work will be translated into French for the occasion, allowing their poems to be experienced in two languages.

Following the readings, guests will have the chance to meet the artists and mix and mingle with their fellow Francophiles and poetry enthusiasts over a complimentary glass of French wine and light refreshments.

Doors at 6:00 pm. Program at 6:30. Please enter via 54 W Chicago Ave. Please kindly indicate any dietary restrictions when registering.

About the Poets

Mahealani Deenik is a writer from Mākaha, Oʻahu. She is a student at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop interested in Native Hawaiian storytelling, poetics, and daily life.

James Garwood-Cole is a poet, editor, and scholar from London. They were the editor of Chicago Review.

Jessi Gaston is a poet who lives in Chicago. They have a chapbook, While, out with The Year, and more recently had work featured in Tagvverk. 

Ed Roberson is the author of To See the Earth Before the End of the World (Wesleyan University Press, 2010), Asked What Has Changed (Wesleyan University Press, 2020), and numerous other poetry collections. His book Red Silk Woven Carpet, The President’s Wife, and the Generals of Autumn is forthcoming from selva oscura press. After a lengthy administrative career at Rutgers University, Roberson moved to Chicago in 2004 and has taught at Columbia College, Northwestern University, and the University of Chicago. Since 2023 he has been a chancellor of the Academy of American Poets. 

About the Journal

Transat’ is published semiannually, in late spring and early winer. Each year, two guest editors guide the conversation. Transat’ is about creating community: by sending two small packages a year to their subscribers, organizing events wherever they go, and dropping off issues of the journals as they travel back and forth, in bookstores on both sides of the ocean.

Getting Here

The Alliance Française de Chicago is one block from the CTA Red line stop at Chicago Ave. Best bus routes are the 22 on Clark St and the 66 on Chicago Ave. A Divvy station is located in front of the 54 W Chicago Ave entrance.

$10 for 12 hours at 100 W Chestnut St. Validation is available at reception.
