What’s better than a dance evening to wrap up our month-long celebration of cultural diversity? The Gros Ngolle Pokossi Band, featuring Anne Pansard on vocals starts slow with French songs then adds African dance hall grooves to the mix. Time to review your coupé décalé!

Born in Cameroon, Emmanuel (Gros) Ngolle Pokossi quickly learned how to play after being inspired to pick up a bass by close neighbors. Gros was encouraged to continue playing by fellow Cameroonian musicians: Vicky Edimo, Aladji Toure, Roger Sabbal Lecco, Moustik Ambassa, and Jean Dikoto Mandengue. After playing in Cameroon with the USA Army band, the Yaounde Jazz band, and Prince Ndedi Eyango, Gros left Cameroon for France in 1986, and then spent twenty-five years in Germany. He now lives in Chicago, after graduating from the Los Angeles College of Music in 1999.

Some of Gros’s most influential experiences include having recorded and toured with the Decoding Society and Trilok Gurtu; and work with great musicians such as Roland Shannon Jackson, James Carter, and Jef Lee Johnson. Additionally, Gros worked with Claude Chalhoub who’s classic, melodic sense of music influenced his music.

Né au Cameroun, Emmanuel (Gros) Ngolle Pokossi a rapidement appris à jouer la basse après avoir été inspiré par ses voisins. Gros a été encouragé à continuer à jouer par d’autres musiciens camerounais : Vicky Edimo, Aladji Toure, Roger Sabbal Lecco, Moustik Ambassa, et Jean Dikoto Mandengue. Après avoir joué au Cameroun avec l’orchestre de l’armée américaine, le Yaounde Jazz band et Prince Ndedi Eyango, Gros a quitté le Cameroun pour la France en 1986, puis a passé vingt-cinq ans en Allemagne. Il vit maintenant à Chicago, après avoir obtenu son diplôme du Los Angeles College of Music en 1999.

Parmi les expériences les plus marquantes de Gros, on peut citer le fait d’avoir enregistré et tourné avec la Decoding Society et Trilok Gurtu, et d’avoir travaillé avec de grands musiciens tels que Roland Shannon Jackson, James Carter et Jef Lee Johnson. De plus, Gros a travaillé avec Claude Chalhoub, dont le sens classique et mélodique de la musique a influencé sa musique.
