A film as French as they come. In honor of the late great Jean-Paul Belmondo, this week at Ciné-Club we'll be taking a look at the movie that launched the iconic actor to star status and heralded in one of the most famous artistic movements in film history. Join us for a discussion of Jean-Luc Godard's quintessential arthouse crime drama:

Breathless ("A bout de souffle", 1960)

Rent on Amazon Prime, Vudu, or YouTube, or stream with an HBO Max subscription.

Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg stand at the precipice of modernity in this New Wave classic that would come to define the principles of avant-garde filmmaking (and even Frenchness!) for years to come. A stylish sixties crime drama concerning a murder, a stolen car, a fraying relationship, and a whole lot of smoldering glances (and cigarettes), Breathless follows the exploits of wannabe coolguy Michel and his aspiring journalist girlfriend Patricia as the pair struggle to deal with the aftermath of an impulsive crime. As Michel scrambles to ditch Paris in an effort to escape the law, Patricia grows less and less certain that she wants to come with. Is there relationship salvageable in light of what's happened? Was it ever tenable to begin with?

Stylistically daring, effortlessly fashionable, and ruminative to the very end, Godard's landmark arthouse achievement is the perfect capsule of French "cool". Love him or hate him, Godard ushered in a new era of French aesthetics with this sexy, soft-spoken classic and its influences are everywhere. How well does this much-acclaimed foundation hold up to modern sensibilities? Let's talk about it!

ABOUT CINÉ CLUB:

Isn’t it time you caught up on all those French classics you’ve been meaning to watch? If you’re a cinéphilefrancophile, or just looking for some fun conversation in these isolating times, we’ve got you covered.
Each week, we’ll reveal the film up for discussion by Wednesday on our social media and the events page of our website. We’ll also include some context to consider while watching, and some links for where to view it. You’ll have the rest of the week to watch the film independently and then we’ll group up online via Zoom on Sunday at 1:00 PM CST to discuss.

For the sake of inclusivity, the discussion will be in English. When you register, we’ll send you a link for accessing the conversation group. Come full of thoughts or just full of ramblings – we’ll take either, or both!

Discussion will be led by Matthew Jackson, curator and animateur of the Ciné-Club since its début in March of 2020. Matthew studied film at the University of Chicago and also moderates film groups for the Italian-American Heritage Society of Chicago and San Francisco's Queer Fear horror meetup group
