HEADS UP! Ciné-club has a new meeting time - in light of the (mostly) lovely weather, we've decided to move our discussions to MONDAYS at 6:30 P.M. It just felt like a crime to keep you inside on a Saturday afternoon.
Speaking of crime, this week's film is full of it - but not in the ways you'd expect. Settle in for an unnerving and surprisingly twisted exploration of guilt, menace, and the secrets we try to keep buried. This week's film is:
Qu'est-ce qui est caché? "What (or who) is hidden?" That is the question underlying Michel Haneke's slowburn thriller, centering on a placid bourgeois household whose peace is shattered by the sudden unexplained delivery of surveillance tapes, showing nothing but the house watched from afar. Who is watching them, and why? What lies beneath this vague, unvoiced menace? As the tapes keep coming in, patriarch Georges takes it upon himself to find out what's going on - but does he have more of a personal investment in this mystery than his family realizes?
Caché is a brilliant example of a modern thriller that can be read with as much depth as you're willing to apply to it. Is it a simple mystery, or an indictment of something much larger? You'll have to see it for yourself to figure out!
ABOUT CINÉ CLUB:
Isn’t it time you caught up on all those French cult classics you’ve been meaning to watch? If you’re a cinéphile, francophile, or just looking for some fun conversation in these isolating times, we’ve got you covered. Join us for a laid-back, weekly discussion of classic films, as we explore the weirder side of the French canon. This ain’t your grandma’s Godard!
Each week, we’ll reveal the film up for discussion by Wednesday on our social media and the events page of our website. We’ll also include some context to consider while watching, and some links for where to view it. You’ll have the rest of the week to watch the film independently and then we’ll group up online via Zoom on Monday at 6:30 PM to discuss. BYOB (or W). Sound good?
For the sake of inclusivity, the discussion will be in English. When you register, we’ll send you a link for accessing the conversation group. Come full of thoughts or just full of ramblings – we’ll take either!
Discussion will be led by Matthew Jackson, one of our culture interns. Matthew studied film at the University of Chicago and spends most of his time blathering about movies online.
