Jeune Femme / Montparnasse Bienvenüe by Léonor Serraille (France, 2017, 98 min.)

With Katherine O’Brien, Screenwriter, Filmmaker, Consultant - In French with English subtitles.

What do you call a 31-year old woman with no home, no job, and nothing but a fluffy white cat for a companion? Léonor Serraille's brilliant new film offers up a simple answer: a jeune femme! While not all young women are as hapless as protagonist Paula, there is nonetheless something eminently relatable about this freshly-dumped redhead, who blows through Paris like a whirlwind, desperately trying, and failing, to settle down. This tragi-comedy gives us a glimpse into the at times hysterical, at times melancholic, life of a woman in search of herself. Laetitia Dosch stars as the unbreakable Paula, and all creative roles in the film production, from camera to composer, sound to set design, were filled almost exclusively by women. Jeune Femme, indeed! Rapturously received and awarded Caméra d’or, or Best First Feature, at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival. “A fearless, powerhouse performance by Laetitia Dosch infuses every frame of Jeune Femme, the kinetic, incident-packed portrait of rudderless yet resilient Paula.” -- Lisa Nesselson, Screendaily.com
