La cérémonie by Claude Chabrol ( France, 1995, 112 min.)

With Milos Stehlik, film critic and Facets director - In French with English subtitles.

The French have a name for the events leading up to a death by guillotine. They call it "the ceremony." No guillotine here but the same ominous feeling infuses a film where Chabrol is at his best best; spinning a thrilling tale of power, class, secrecy and manipulation. In La Cérémonie, two working class women, played to icy perfection by Isabelle Huppert and Sandrine Bonnaire, develop a co-dependent relationship, which signals danger for the upper crust family for which one of them works... One of the core Nouvelle Vague directors, whose iconic Le Beau Serge heralded the coming of the wave, Chabrol went on to direct 54 films and becoming a master of suspense, much like his American idol, Hitchcock.

“France's master of suspense, Claude Chabrol, relishes every malevolent, icily controlled shot of this perfectly constructed thriller, right up to its terrifying, violent climax.” – The Guardian
