Should a language be protected? What does laïcité mean? How should we approach the legacy of colonialism? These questions spark debate from Paris to Montréal, Dakar to Brussels. In this course, you will read, listen, and discuss a range of contemporary issues through authentic French-language materials. Each week, we will work from a press article accompanied by a short vocabulary guide. Students will read the article at home (approximately 20–30 minutes) and then exchange ideas in small groups before discussing them as a class. For those interested, optional literary excerpts from writers such as Renan and Césaire will also be offered. Throughout the course, you will expand your vocabulary for expressing opinions and constructing arguments, develop your ability to understand authentic texts, and gain confidence in defending, qualifying, and nuancing your ideas in French.
