TCF Certificate (Test de Connaissance du Français)

• The TCF (Test de connaissance du français) is the French test awarded by the Centre International d'Etudes Pédagogiques, official department of the French Ministry of Education for administring tests determinig knowledge of French.

• TCF assesses a candidate's level in French for general purposes. It is intended for people who are not native French-speakers and who, for professional, personal or academic reasons, want to have their competency in French assessed and certified simply, reliably and quickly.

• The TCF is a standardized and graded test designed by the CIEP using an extremely rigorous method that makes it a genuine measuring instrument.

• All candidates receive a certificate of results that positions them at one of the six levels (from A1 to C2) of the competency scale defined by the Council of Europe (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). This means that it is not possible to fail the TCF.

• The TCF has three compulsory tests and two optional ones.
Compulsory tests: listening comprehension, language structures, reading comprehension (1.5 hours).
Optional tests: oral expression (15 minutes), written expression (2 hours).
The Alliance Française de Chicago organizes testing sessions for the standard TCF. Other versions of the TCF (TCF for international bodies, TCF for Québec) can be organized on demand.
For more information on those versions, visit the CIEP site.

• Each candidate is provided with a certificate stating their test results within 2-3 weeks of the test date, and which is valid for 2 years.

Final year undergraduates and postgraduate students, and students at the French Grandes Ecoles: the TCF is systematically required by higher education institutes for any student that wishes to apply for final year undergraduate study or postgraduate study (Final year of Degree course, first and second year of Masters programs and PhD students) at any higher education institute and the French Grandes Ecoles.
For more information on those versions, visit the CIEP site

For those immigrating to Canada, session are organized upon request.
